A Rare Type follows 14-year-old basketball standout Kai Lowery, a gifted point guard and shooter for Twelve Time EYBL who plays the game he loves while fighting a battle most people never see. Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age three, Kai manages every moment of his life with an insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor. On the surface, he’s just another kid chasing a basketball dream but beneath that, he’s locked in a constant struggle with his body’s highs and lows.
The documentary captures Kai’s story through intimate, direct-to-camera realism, self-shot family footage, and cinematic on-court moments. It blends the visible game of basketball with the invisible game of chronic illness, revealing both the resilience required to compete and the universal fight to overcome what others cannot see.
Raw, uplifting, and deeply human, A Rare Type is a portrait of courage, representation, and the power of dreams.
